Yellow gold is a classic choice for jewellery. Its long history as a status symbol for the rich and powerful means that gold is grounded in luxury and is used worldwide to create special accessories. However, the last few decades saw western fashion turn towards white metals, with the likes of silver, white gold, and platinum leading jewellery trends.

These metals are still popular with consumers, praised for their cool look and hardwearing qualities, but in general the 2020s has seen a return to tradition when it comes to jewellery trends. For example, the once-outdated pearl is now one of the most coveted gems to feature on earrings and necklaces. Similarly, yellow gold seems to be having a revival.

Many people credit Meghan Markle as a key influence in the revitalisation of gold jewellery, especially as a choice for brides-to-be. Both Meghan and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, are seen as style icons, continuing Princess Diana’s legacy. Meghan’s choice of gold and diamond engagement ring and corresponding traditional yellow gold wedding ring helped to bring the metal back into the mainstream.

That being said, as with all fashions, the favoured metal for jewellery is on a constant cycle and it was only a matter of time until gold came back onto the catwalk. When you also consider that yellow gold is easy to clean, retains its brightness better than silver, and is more affordable than platinum, it is hardly surprising that this trusty metal is back as one of the most coveted choices for jewellery.

While old gold jewellery tends to have a brassy undertone, however, modern yellow gold jewellery is lighter. This reinforces the idea that gold jewellery is fresh and youthful. The brighter yellow shade also better complements most gemstones and the rainbow of rhinestones that are currently everywhere thanks to a return to 90s trends and the recent smash hit feature film Barbie.

This theme of youthfulness is dominating 2023 jewellery trends, also evident in the geometric shapes and overly-large links that underpin the designs of current yellow gold jewellery. For example, pearl earrings are being updated with juxtaposing bright metal spikes, and chunky statement-making necklaces is a major look for this autumn.

Do you prefer to keep things more subtle? You can still join the ranks celebrating the yellow gold revival. Consider investing in a ‘power pinkie’ ring, a delicate accessory that can be worn daily that is nevertheless an eye-catching adornment. Alternatively, you could opt for gold jewellery that features beads in a dark or muted shade. This contrasting coupling has emerged as an antithesis to the youthful colours and exuberance of this year’s dominating Barbiecore fashion trend.
