Let’s Talk About Laser Hair Removal

Lockdown restrictions lifting mean my beauty maintenance schedule is back in full flow which means Laser Hair Removal is back on my beauty agenda. Getting rid of unwanted hair has been a hot topic of conversation post lockdown so I thought I’d write a post all about it.

Shaving and waxing is only a temporary solution to do away with thick hair growth. Permanent hair removal needs more than just stripping off waxing strips and investing your hard-earned money on razors.

Here’s a guide to hair removal with laser, a one stop solution for getting that smooth hair-free skin.

How is it Different from Conventional Methods?

Unlike shaving, laser hair removal reaches the root of the hair with a beam of light passing through the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) and targets the follicle. The process doesn’t hurt the skin and it’s almost pain-free.

It makes the hair follicle weak and avoids the hair re-growth in that particular area. The method is backed by science and marked safe by Dermatologists.

How Long Does the Treatment Last?

Doctors advise a minimum of 8 sessions with roughly 30-minute treatment per sitting. It is best suited for the removal of hair in areas like the legs, underarms and bikini line. I’ve had all 3 areas done.

Is the laser removal process safe?

The procedure is safe and, for each session, you’ll be wearing special glasses to protect your eyes from the laser beam. There is no such discomfort during the treatment, but one can expect some changes after:

  • Mild swelling and redness on the area are common after laser removal therapy. It lasts half an hour or even less in some cases.
  • Some might experience skin irritation and itchiness. It is advised to apply ice to the affected area and stop worrying about the cause. Seek medical advice immediately and don’t apply any steroid cream.

Precautions to take

Though the therapy won’t last long, there are some precautions to keep in mind for healthier skin.

  • Between treatments to avoid going out, and exposing yourself to direct sunlight is strictly not advised (I got mine done in autumn so tanning wouldn’t get in the way.
  • Apply Sunscreen ( SPF30) on the affected area.
  • Shave the area before coming for laser treatment. It’ll be easier for your dermatologist to pass the beam when the skin is clear.

What can you expect after the treatment?

Laser removal is not a magic wand, it’ll take time and hair will fall out gradually. Results may vary with every individual and the process can last several months. If you are looking for a long-term hair reduction, consult with your doctor and get treated accordingly.

It’s Not Just for Women

Laser hair removal for men is the most adopted therapy worldwide for clearing out hair follicles and having hair-free skin. The cost does vary and you might also need some maintenance or a top up later down the line after the therapy.

Have you had laser hair removal?

This was a collaborative post but my love of laser hair removal is 100% my own.
