Where to Stay in Salem: The Merchant Hotel

Hello, hello, so we’ve only just returned from eating our way down the East Coast of the USA, but let me take you back to where our trip started where we checked into our first hotel in Salem (6 pounds lighter I’m sure). Why Salem? Well, after leaving it a little too late to book our Boston accommodation, (the hotels were coming up at around £500 for a Holiday Inn) we researched the nearby areas and settled on Salem as it’s only a 30 minute trip on the train or by car to downtown Boston. FULL DISCLOSURE, this wasn’t a sponsored trip and I didn’t get a free stay I simply wanted to let you all in on this little gem of a hotel that we found which made us feel right at home in a strange city. We picked The Merchant because of its boutiquey feel and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Each room is wonderfully unique and packed with personality. Our stay was priced around the £200 per night mark, a little more than we would usually like to pay, but we felt the central location and the comfort and luxury it offered made it 100% worth it. There’s plenty of quirky eateries on your doorstep although the hotel puts out the cutest small plates offering blueberry muffins, fruit cups and fresh oats each morning which are complimentary for hotel guests. They also have snack stations with tea, coffee and pretzels which make the perfect snack when you wake up at 4am slightly jetlagged. We hired a rental car at the airport and arrived a little after 8pm so we pretty much flopped into bed with our snacks and fell asleep to the soothing sounds of Netflix.

Here are just a few reasons why I’d recommend the Merchant Hotel:

It’s a home away from home – With only 11 rooms, this hotel feels cosy and not in the least bit crowded and the small luxurious touches like the underfloor heating, cloud-like pillows and the in-room log burner make you feel instantly settled.

The fabulous decor – Our room was absolutely divine. I had scouted out the rooms on Instagram before we booked and we loved how each room was unique. We picked the King Deluxe room and the bed was so huge that we couldn’t reach each other.

Ipad – Each room comes with a personal Ipad packed with info on the local area such as places of interest and recommended places to eat. Perfect when you don’t want to think after a long flight.

Breakfast – You won’t find pre-packaged cereals and toast here. More like homemade breakfast muffins, fruit cups and smoothies. Want something bigger? Go to Ugly Mugs cafe. Best breakfast in town!

Little luxuries – From fancy pants toiletries to underfloor heating, you really feel like you are living in luxury from the moment you check in.

The best base – This hotel is within walking distance of everything from cute eateries to authentic witchcraft shops and museums.

Have you visited Salem? Have you stayed at The Merchant?
