Interior Inspiration Part Two: Let’s Talk Tiles

Image

Just look at those tiles. They remind me of a few of my favourite things, peacock feathers, mermaid tails and the ocean when the sun is setting. This is a little follow up to the post I published back in May about Bathroom Envy. We’re taking the plunge and getting our en-suite decorated and this week we are making some very important tile related decisions. #adulting. Tiles can be overlooked by some who view them as a necessity as opposed to a design feature. However, tiles take centre stage in your bathrooms and after scrolling through pinterest I realised just how many styles caught my eye. Like a blank canvas, tiles give you the opportunity to build and create any number of sophisticated and beautiful designs and this year has seen a number of trends that are perfect for any home. Leave me a comment with your favourite tile trend.

Hexagon

For something slightly more contemporary, a hexagon tile is perfect. This tile has massively taken off this year thanks to their unusual shape. Compared to a square or rectangle tile, the hexagon tile stands out and offers a geometric shape that is perfect for bringing some dimension to a room. These tiles look great when coupled with contrasting grout to really make their unique shape stand out.

Terracotta (image)

Thanks to its Mediterranean heritage, the terracotta tile offers a warm, earthy aesthetic that is perfect for shaking up a room. These tiles just remind me of childhood holidays and past memories. In terms of colour, these tiles have strong orange and red undertones to bring you that rich vibrancy for both style and cosiness. These tiles work perfectly with other similar rustic furnitures such as woven baskets or potted plants for that authentic Mediterranean look. However, I think they might be a little too traditonal for our home.

Natural Stone (image)

With its rustic and natural look the stone tile is ideal for bringing the outdoors, in. Natural stone tiles offer that gorgeous texture to a room that works beautifully with potted plants and distressed furniture pieces for that truly natural aesthetic. Natural stone tiles are perfect for bathrooms since they are impervious to water. Additionally, their strength gives them an incredibly long life resulting in a tile with amazing longevity and durability. When I first decided to revamp my bathroom, this was my first choice but that was before the stunning aqua toned tiles caught my eye.

Patterned (image)

Perhaps one of the biggest trends to take off in recent years is that of patterns. Patterned tiles are a great way of bringing in a range of gorgeous colour combinations and designs that allow you to work with accent colours seamlessly. While pattern tiles are available in a range of bold colours and finishes, some pattern tiles use softer and more gentle palettes and designs. This means there is a perfect tile pattern for everyone. Choosing a pattern tile adds a brilliant sense of fluidity to a room and can give you a professional finish when matched with harmonious furnitures and accessories. Am I brave enough?

Metro (image)

I couldn’t write a trends piece without of course mentioning the metro tile. Arguably the biggest interiors trend to have emerged in recent years, the metro tile gives a gorgeous retro chic design. Their simple shape looks stunning when matched with contrasting grouting for a slightly more vintage effect. First making a statement on the London Underground in the early 1900s, the metro tile has a rich history that can therefore bring great character to a room. For a classic metro tile look, opt for a gloss finish on your tile that will give you a beautiful shine.
