How to Prepare for a Fitness Bootcamp

Fitness Bootcamp

If you’re a regular reader, you will know that I’m a huge fan of fitness bootcamps and with my trip to Northern Bootcamp coming up this month, I thought I’d whip up a little post about preparing yourself for a fitness holiday. With trips to Morocco, Miami, The Bahamas and Mallorca firmly set in my calendar *puts down Twix*, I’ve booked a weekend at Northern Bootcamp to kickstart my S/S fitness routine.

Why I Love Bootcamps

Yes, a fitness bootcamp is a great way to shift a few pounds but I don’t see them as a quick fix. I maintain a regular exercise regime throughout the year and use bootcamps to get my diet back on track. March is the perfect time to go with my Morocco trip in late April, it will give me the motivation I need to eat well before I go. Set in Northumberland, I’m excited to find a fitness bootcamp that isn’t based in or around London.

Now, fitness holidays require a little more preperation that your average weekend away. Yes, if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to book in for that last minute pedicure but you’ll also want to tweak your diet and fitness regime on the run up to it too. Now, I’m not claiming to be an expert in this area, these are simply the things I do to prepare for an intense weekend of excercise.

Cut Down on Caffiene and Sugar

One of the most challenging aspects of a fitness bootcamp is adjusting to a clean diet. Without my daily chocolate fix I tend to get a bit stroppy so I always try and cut out chocolate a week in advance and have less sweet treats in general to prepare for the days that I won’t be able to get my hands on a Kit Kat. I don’t drink coffee but from experience one of the things my fellow bootcampers have found extremely difficult is not having access to an endless supply of caffiene. If you like to have a few cups of coffee during the day, try and cut down over time to get your body used to having less.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Now one of my new year’s resolutions was to drink more water and as hard as I try I can’t seem to hit my 2 litre target. It’s best to arrive at bootcamp as hydrated as possible and remember to keep it up during your stay.

Increase Physical Activity

On the run up to any fitness holiday I usually increase the number of gym sessions to prepare my body for intense workouts. I also try and mix it up a little bit to prepare for the wide variety of excericses that we will do. If you follow me on Twitter you will have heard me talking about my current gym routine and I’ve been doing 3 gym classes per week at Implexus gym. I’ve managed to add in lots of walking as well before my trip.

Top up your Fitness Clothing Collection

With multiple exercise sessions in one day, you might want to change your clothes quite regularly so you will need quite a lot of kit. I always use fitness holidays as an excuse to top up my gym clothing collection (hello Sweaty Betty) and you can see what I usually pack here.
