THE MALDIVES: MY TOP TRAVEL DESTINATION 2016

Kuramathi Island The Maldives

One boat, three planes and a bus, The Maldives isn’t the easiest place to get to but once you arrive, the memory of hours of travelling is replaced with crystal blue waters and blindingly white sand. I’ve just returned from my Maldivian honeymoon and I’m already thinking about booking my next trip. Why do holidays make you want to go on more holidays? Some are so jam packed you need to book a holiday just to recover while some trips simply inspire you to discover more unchartered territory. In an attempt to keep the holiday blues away, I thought I’d share with you my top travel destination for 2016 and bust a few of those myths that surround The Maldives.

It’s Just for Honeymooners

Nothing can quite prepare you for the beauty of The Maldives. Arriving by sea plane allows you to soak up spectacular ariel views of the atolls, each island just as breathtaking as the other. This stunning destination is a honeymooner’s dream but you don’t have to be married to appreciate its beauty. It’s also a great place for families and couples to seek out winter sun. I expected the island to be populated with newlyweds but I was surprised to see groups of friends and families sunning themselves on every shore. That being said, the resort is large enough to make you feel like it’s just the two of you. For the first few days, we barely even saw another guest giving the island a deliciously deserted feel.

Once You’ve Seen One Island You’ve Seen Them All

Before I visited The Maldives, I presumed it was a one time thing. Staying in a water villa and waking up to shimmering sea views each day was idyllic and I would love to return and discover some of the other smaller islands. Each island has a different vibe and if I could return, I would jump at the chance. I’d love to go with my Mum as I really couldn’t think of a better place to spend a bit of Mother-Daughter time.

It’s Too Expensive

Don’t get me wrong, nothing about the Maldives is cheap and it will never come under the budget holiday bracket but there are ways to make it cheaper. Simply picking the right time of year can save you hundreds of pounds. November is one of the most affordable times to go as the weather is slightly less predictable but we only experienced a few tropical showers during our trip.

You’ll Get Bored

This is the ideal place for relaxation, I could have easily stayed here for a month dolphin watching from my sun lounger, a daiquiri in hand and don’t get me started on the spa. However, that being said, if you want to fill your days with exciting activities you can. There are turtle safaris, excursions, DJs, watersports and all kinds of things to keep you entertained.

I hope you loved my top travel destination for 2016 and I hope this post has inspired you to travel somewhere new next year.
